Artwork Description:
Am’eniti explores the woven mat as an object of craft, utility and commerce, while reflecting on the people and traditions that give it meaning. The title carries a deliberate linguistic duality. Its Yoruba resonance evokes the mat maker: the weaver who completes the work, leans the mats against the wall and gathers them in readiness for the marketplace. Its English echo of amenity speaks to the mat’s enduring versatility—as a surface for rest, sleep, meals, gatherings and celebration. Executed in Terrachroma, the work extends this narrative into the material itself. Soil becomes both pigment and provenance, connecting the depicted lives to the earth from which their environment, labour and livelihood emerge. In Am’eniti, an everyday object becomes a quiet record of craft, enterprise, community and cultural memory—where earth, labour and commerce converge.
